Alan White - White Signs Founder White Signs Original PremisesWhites Signs - Craftsmanship since 1936.

In 1936 Whites Signs Services was opened in a small studio on Tuam Street by the first generation of Whites, Alan. A well known character in Christchurch, Alan was famous for his old Roadstar Pushbike which he piled high with pots of paint and a ladder before wobbling off to a job.

The business flourished and by the late 1940's Whites had moved to grander premises on High Street. Alans son Paul took over the reigns, who learnt his expertise under his father when he joined the business in 1956. Today the business is owned by Nigel Kearns, with Paul retiring in 2005. Nigel, a former employee of White Signs during 2001 to 2003 developed his skills under Paul and spent some time prior to 2005 running his own business Signvision which operates alongside Whites Signs today.

White Signs Premises

In the signage business it pays to be versatile. When the company started in the late 1930's each sign produced was crafted from timber and hand painted, requiring considerable skill and patience. In particular the award winning signs made by White's signs for the number of theaters then open in Christchurch were like small works of art with vibrant colours and designs.

Today few signs are hand painted, with our expertise utilised in making the signs rather than writing them. Using engraving and routering techniques Whites now produce striking 3D designs that can be raised off the surface or backlit with spotlights to produce stunning results. But not all signs must now be handcrafted. With some of the latest graphic design software and printer, Whites can reproduce any image into a wide range of surfaces, while our years of skill ensure a truly flawless result.
